Cannes Film Festival 2017

With all eyes turning to the famous city of Cannes in May for the 70th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, formerly known as the International Film Festival, we decided to take a look at what can be expected during the 11 days from 17 – 28 May 2017.

Cannes is synonymous with prestige and luxury and at this time of year the villas and yachts are gearing up to the party season. The Cannes Film Festival attracts the biggest names in film to compete for the coveted Palm d’Or prize. This year the jury is headed up by Pedro Almodóvar with Will Smith and Jessica Chastain amongst the judges.

The Film Festival

There are actually two congresses that run side by side, the Festival de Cannes brings together the best films of the moment in competition both artistically and commercially. It is widely regarded as the most important film festival in the world. The Marché du Film runs alongside the film festival and draws together business associates, producers and film professionals to buy and sell film rights for the blockbusters of the future.

The City of Cannes

The French Riviera town’s population swells during the festival with over 140 000 participants and visitors expected to descend on the city for the prestigious filmworld event. Hotels, villas yachts and apartments all host the world’s most famous actors, actresses, producers and directors.

The Red carpet

The world’s most famous movie stars have long vied to be papped on the infamous red carpet that leads up the stairs of the Palais de Festival on the Croisette by one of the 5000 journalists in town. Organisers lay 60m of fresh carpet before each screening, that’s a whopping 180m per day in order to make sure that the celebrities and their haute-couture creations and stylish shoes are walking on the finest!

The Palme d’Or

The Palme d’Or award for the best film in the selection for the 70th edition of the Festival de Cannes will be competing to win a special diamond encrusted edition of the trophy handmade by exclusive Swiss jewellers Chopard in their Geneva workshop.
